The Conference aims at

o Exploring theoretical and comparative models for understanding conflicts and peace from multidisciplinary perspectives

o Investigating the possibilities of Mainstreaming Peace education

o Formulating policy recommendations in the area of conflict prevention, transformation and peace building

SESSIONS

All sessions will be multidisciplinary in nature. Each will address its respective thrust areas from the perspectives of (in alphabetical order) Economics, History, International Relations & Political Science, Visual Arts, Social Work, Sociology and Literary Studies. Every session will begin with a plenary lecture by an expert and will be followed by three paper presentations.

SESSION I: CONTEXTUALISING PEACE AND CONFLICT

This session will situate peace and conflict in specific historical, social, political and cultural contexts. It will emphasise an approach to conflict that is specific to the geographic location, historical / cultural / political situation. The session will underscore the need to evolve peacebuilding strategies keeping in mind these specificities. We look for papers that will deliberate upon such contextualised peace and conflict from the perspectives of the disciplines mentioned above.

SESSION II: PERSPECTIVES ON PEACE AND CONFLICT

The Plenary and papers in this session will discuss how the different disciplines of Economics, History, International Relations & Political Science, Visual Arts, Social Work, Sociology and Literary Studies study peace and conflict.

SESSION III: GANDHIAN APPROACHES TO PEACE

This session will deliberate upon Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s views on peace and consider the impact of his ideas and writings on peace from the perspectives of Economics, History, International Relations & Political Science, Visual Arts, Social Work, Sociology and Literary Studies.

SESSION IV: MAINSTREAMING PEACE EDUCATION

This session will consider methods of including peace studies as a component in school and college curricula. It will also reflect upon the components of peace studies that can be introduced into different disciplines and deliberate upon models / modules of peace education that are already in use.

SESSION V: POLICY APPROACHES AND STRATEGIES FOR PEACE BUILDING

This session will work towards suggesting policies and developing strategies for peacebuilding from different disciplinary points of view. It will also consider models of successful peaceful protests/ peace initiatives from across the world and use them as possible prototypes for further peacebuilding initiatives.
