Department of Botany

The B.Sc. Botany Degree programme was started in 1979 with Ms. N.E. Rajalakshmi as the Head and since 2001 has offered an undergraduate programme in Plant Biology and Biotechnology.

This interdisciplinary programme offered by the Department ensures that students who want to pursue higher education acquire the necessary foundation, while those for whom it is a terminal degree, acquire the necessary skills to become entrepreneurs or enter the job market. The programme offers a balanced syllabus which includes both classical Botany and Biotechnology, thus affording students a wider knowledge of the various aspects of the Life Sciences. To keep pace with the rapid strides made in the field of Science and Technology, the programme was renamed Plant Biology and Biotechnology.

To enhance experiential learning, the Department organises field visits to Research Centres and laboratories engaged in Tissue Culture, as well as industrial visits to Institutes cultivating alternative food such as mushrooms and spirulina. Other institutional visits expose them to environmental initiatives, while visits to the Irula Tribal Centre help them to learn more about traditional medicine. Visits to the sea coast for algal collection are also a part of the curriculum.

The General Elective courses offered by the department are aimed at creating awareness on ecosensitive issues and preparing students to be entrepreneurs.

The Department has created and maintains a Herbal Garden on the College campus, and is currently involved in mushroom cultivation.

The Department is one among those chosen under the Star College Scheme of the DBT, which provides for the popularisation of Basic Sciences and Biology.

The Department also offers a UGC sponsored Certificate Course on Herbal Therapy and Beauty Care in collaboration with Visible Difference, an Institute of Cosmetology.
