Chemistry was offered as an undergraduate programme, Branch IV- Chemistry - in 1964 under the leadership of Sr. Irene Mathias fmm. The Department has been making continuous efforts to keep pace with developments in the field and has periodically introduced challenging and innovative courses. The postgraduate programme in M.Sc. Branch IV – Chemistry was introduced in 2004, with specialisation in Polymer and Environmental Chemistry.

The Department, with a focus on enhancing the knowledge and skills of the students, has been conducting inter-Departmental and inter-collegiate activities, through the Science Association, Science Club, Chemistry Club and Chemfest (REACTIONS). It has also been actively involved in various outreach programmes for the uplift of society. The Skill Development courses and the Entrepreneurial Skills course offered at the UG and PG levels enhances the employment opportunities of the students and gives them hands-on learning experiences.

The Department was awarded the “Star Department Status” by DBT, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India in 2013. It has signed MoUs with research institutions like CLRI and IGCAR and has Academia – Industry Linkages with CPCL, Orchid Pharmaceuticals, Kniss Laboratories Ltd, Anabond, Diet Aqua Excel Water System, Metalloys and Asthagiri Herbal Foundation.

The Department strives to inculcate in students a scientific curiosity, enhance technical skills and sensitise them to social and environmental issues through the Social Awareness Programme and Service Learning programmes. The Department strives to reach greater heights in the field of innovative research. To engage in research, the Department has established a research lab in 2008 and has four UGC funded minor and one major research project to its credit. Today, the Department is a full-fledged Research Department.
