When Stella Maris College was founded in 1947, students who chose the Arts stream were required to study history, philosophy, and music. In 1957, a separate Department of History was set up within the College. There were eight students in that first batch of 1957, and Sr. Floridus, who later became the Principal of Maris Stella College at Vijayawada, was the first Head of the Department.

Since then, our courses and curriculum have been revamped to meet the needs of the travel industry, corporate sector, higher education, research, and civil services.

The curriculum of the Department of History is both utilitarian and job-oriented. Hundreds of young women have graduated from the Department and have made their mark as teachers, researchers, bankers, civil servants, and hospitality industry and management professionals.

In 2011 the Department was renamed "Department of History and Tourism" with the introduction of an equal number of tourism courses for each semester. New courses such as  Business Tourism, Global Tourism, and Hospitality Management form part of the curriculum.

The Department conducts an educational tour for the third year students. As part of the Social Awareness Programme (SAP), students undergo training in conservation techniques used in museums; the programme gives them an opportunity to expand the boundaries of learning.

The Department conducts various events - an annual intercollegiate history festival called 'BC to AD' and a Travel and Tourism Mart. There is also an annual publication of a Department journal called 'History Update'. The Smt. Indira Gandhi Annual Endowment Lectures have been organized by the Department in memory of the late Prime Minister.

Since 2012 the Department has entered into a tie-up with the Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition. Every year the students are trained in Food & Beverage services, as well as Front Office Management and Housekeeping. Since 2012, the Department has also entered into a tie-up with the Chennai Business School and classes are conducted for the students of International Business Management on Global History.
