Public Relations

The postgraduate degree programme in Public Relations, started in 2006, under the headship of Dr. Sundari Krishnamurthy, is both relevant and necessary in the context of globalisation.  The emerging socio-economic scenario in India needs trained people in a wide range of fields: organizations in the public, private and corporate sector, non-governmental organizations, self-help groups, and international organizations. The Department offers a well articulated programme in Communication designed for enthusiastic current and prospective Public Relations practitioners, who wish to enhance their skills and professional standing.

This course offers a platform to transform theory into practical experiences in-order to gear the students to meet the needs of the media industry. Theory-cum-practical specialization subjects such as Event Management, Media Management, Digital PR, Communication Tools for PR, Creative Public Relations, and Perspectives of Human Resource Development in PR are a part of the curriculum, that offers career to many students.

The course aims to produce, not only responsible PR persons, but also desires to sensitize citizens to social concerns thereby creating bigger mind-space for the people of global village.

 The programme has been designed with the following objectives:

  • to train students for public service and equip them to play a vital role in determining future socio-political trends.
  • to impart knowledge and develop skills in industry-relevant technologies
  • to offer inter-disciplinary courses with participation from reputed Institutions
  • to present a unique Industry-Academia alliance which can provide value-added education
  • to demonstrate the commitment of participating institutions to society
  • to provide a base and an environment for applied research

The course which is taught by faculty as well as expert guest faculty, is multi-sectoral and has an inter-disciplinary approach. Innovative teaching methods are used and students are trained in seminar and paper presentation. Field visits to print agencies, community radio stations, internet booths, and corporate communications departments are arranged in order to give students practical exposure to their areas of study. Students are required to complete a mandatory internship in non-governmental organisations, the corporate sector, the service sector and government departments. The programme also includes a Research Project in Semester IV.

Every year the final year students choose a socially relevant issue, such as Minsar- Conservation of Electricity and advocating the use of Solar energy, PLZ-Promote Liter-free Zone, Sthree- Say Yes to Cancer Care etc. and conceptualise, raise funds, customise, canvas, execute and evaluate the impact of a Public Relations Campaign using the communication tools taught in the previous semesters.
